Positivity: What Good Is It to Feel Good?  with Barbara Fredrickson, Ph.D.
November 17, 2010 7:00-8:30 PM
Cornog Auditorium on New Trier's Northfield Campus
7 Happ Rd., Northfield, IL

Bullet points from Barbara Fredrickson's handout:

Why Parents Need to Know About Positivity

  • It can affect your ability to listen to your kids.
  • It can affect your kids’ performance on exams.
  • It determines how resilient your kids are to life’s challenges.
  • It can affect your ability to bounce back after arguments with your kids.
  • It nourishes your kid’s growth, perhaps as much as do fruits and vegetables.
  • It’s the vital ingredient within quality time.
  • It’s the bedrock of happiness, yours and theirs.
  • It builds your kids’ character. Yours, too!
  • It promotes your kids’ health. Yours, too!
  • You can seed it, in yourself and in your kids.

Article from Make It Better on the talk.

One of the most influential contributors to the field of affective science and social psychology, Barbara Fredrickson, Ph.D., is the Director of the Positive Emotions and Psychophysiology Lab (PEPLab) at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill as well as the author of the best-selling book, Positivity. Dr. Fredrickson's "broaden-and-build" research studies how positive emotions accumulate to transform people's lives for the better, and may be the key ingredient in the recipe for human flourishing. Dr. Fredrickson is a major figure in the field of positive psychology, with groundbreaking work into the emotional life of humans. Come here how positive emotions work and why, and what you can do to enhance your "positivity ratio." Presented in partnership with New Trier High School's Ethical Conduct and Global Citizenship (ECGC) parent committee and the Charmm'd Foundation.

CPDU credits will be available for professionals.

As a follow-up program to Dr. Fredrickson's visit to our area, FAN will host two free introductory meditation sessions, led by the popular Ramaa Krishnan, founder of Full Bloomed Lotus Center for Self-Awareness, in Wilmette. Ramaa teaches meditation and Kundalini yoga along with lessons in self-awareness, and is a Wilmette parent with children in the public schools. The session will be held on Thursday, November 18 at 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM, for one hour each. Dr. Fredrickson practices meditation, and advocates it as a way of reducing negativity. Bring a friend -- you're sure to find value!  Sign up NOW. All sessions were filled!
